Holy Week and the Curse of the Fig Tree

One of the things Jesus did during Holy Week after entering Jerusalem was to curse the fig tree. Why did he do that? The tree had lots of leaves but was barren of fruit which also symbolized Israel’s spiritual barrenness. The cursed fig tree consequently dies just like we do when our spiritual lives are barren. Jesus wasn’t being mean when he cursed the tree, it was a reminder to the people that God will judge those not living a righteous life. And because of Holy Week, where just in a couple of days Jesus will die on the cross for our sins, making it possible for us to live in eternity with Him. Because of Jesus’s sacrifice during Holy Week, when we live righteously and bear fruit like a normal healthy fig tree does, God will judge us accordingly. I don’t know about you but I want to bear fruit and try to live as righteously as I can because I don’t want to die and wither on the vine like this particular cursed tree and not get to spend eternity with such a loving and caring God.
